Quilchena is a low density residential neighbourhood located at the heart of the city’s west side. Tucked nicely in between Arbutus Ridge and Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale and Mackenzie Heights, Quilchena is a perfect representation of all the said communities. It is a peaceful neighbourhood with only Arbutus as the main street. Once a middle class enclave, Quilchena is now made up of many affluent families.

History

Quilchena was first settled by the Guichon brothers who went to British Columbia in pursuit of thee Cariboo gold rush. When their rewards appeared marginal, they eventually ranched most of the Nicola Valley region. Upon the establishment of the BC Railway Line, residents started to flock in this area and built the present Quilchena community.

Geographic Location

Quilchena is a middle class Vancouver community that features a mix of older residents and young families. This peaceful and serene neighbourhood is made up of several low rise apartment buildings and suburban style homes. Quilchena is a family friendly neighbourhood with plenty of community centers and schools nearby. The neighbourhood also features senior services in its vicinity.  Quilchena is an unincorporated neighbourhood located at the southern shore of the Nicola Lake, near Merritt City, British Columbia. A heritage hotel is considered as its main landmark, lately made into a small golf resort.

Housing

Quilchena is a neighbourhood dominated by detached single family residences. The past few years have seen the development of several low rise condos that can be seen along Arbutus Street. The Quilchena community is also home to a good population of Vancouver seniors and features various amenities focusing on this population. Quilchena is a great place to live in for people who are seeking serenity amidst their busy downtown office life. While the community is more oriented towards senior living, Quilchena is also the home of many independent young professionals. There are a number of basement suites and low rise condos for rent.

School and Transportation

Quilchena is also the home to many young families as there are many public schools near the area. There are also several private educational institutions nearby, just a few blocks away in Shaughnessy. Quilchena’s close proximity to the downtown metro makes for an easy and convenient commute. The Arbutus Street is the main street connecting the community to other parts of the city.

Shopping and Recreation

Residents can enjoy a lot of outdoor activities at the nearby Nicola Valley. The area is known as the hiking country with its mountain meadows, rolling hills, endless walking/biking trails and panoramic views. There are about 200 streams and lakes in the area which provide opportunities for sailing, boating and camping. Shopping is usually done in the nearby communities such as Arbutus Ridge.
